Woodland animals - Knitting pattern

These adorable woodland animals have been designed to be easy to knit and suitable for beginners. The patterns are easy to follow with plenty of pictures to help understand the shape of parts, and putting them together.

After a new arrival in our wider family, I (Tim) was motivated to make a soft toy as a gift. I enjoyed it so much that I made a few more soft toy gifts. I enjoyed this so much that I made some that I designed myself and after many trials my woodland animals were born. I wanted to create something that allowed a child to use their imagination and so I based the animals on a rectangular shape, and focused on the main characteristics of each animal, such as the bat's wings, robin's red breast, mouse's ears and the hedgehog's spikes.

These animals make a wonderful gift for any newborn, child, loved one, friend or maybe just for yourself!

The finished sizes range from The Robin at 16cm tall up to The Mouse at 23cm and require Sport/DK Light yarn and 3.25-3.5mm needles. The wool quantity varies by animal but none of them need more than 18g of the main colour.

The techniques required to knit these animals include knit and purl, casting on and off, simple increase and decrease and seaming. Cable cast on is used in The Robin and The Bat and a loop stitch is part of the hedgehog, for which a tutorial is included in that pattern.
