Safari animals soft toy knitting pattern

These adorable safari animals have been designed to be easy to knit and suitable for beginners. The patterns are easy to follow with plenty of pictures to help understand the shape of parts, and putting them together.

After a new arrival in our wider family, I (Tim) was motivated to make a soft toy as a gift. I enjoyed it so much that I made a few more soft toy gifts. I enjoyed this so much that I made some that I designed myself and after many trials my woodland animals were born, and they have now been followed by these safari animals. I wanted to create something that allowed a child to use their imagination so I based the animals on a rectangular shape, and focused on the main characteristics of each animal, such as the lion's mane, the elephants trunk and tusks, the zebra's stripes and the flamingos legs and beak.

These animals make a wonderful gift for any newborn, child, loved one, friend or maybe just for yourself!

The finished sizes range from The Elephant at 20cm tall up to The Flamingo at 23cm and require Sport/DK Light yarn and 3.25-3.5mm needles. The wool quantity varies by animal but none of them need more than 20g of the main colour.

The techniques required to knit these animals include knit and purl, casting on and off, simple increase and decrease and seaming. Cable cast on is used in The Zebra and Lion. A loop stitch is used for the on The Lion and The Zebra, for which a tutorial is included.
